Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have a burning question about my writing and editing services?
Content writing and editing FAQs
-
Do you have a speciality?
I've long been known as a careers content writer, specialising in job search, recruitment and outplacement topics. I've written in this capacity for industry-leading brands, including Careerminds, Career.io, CV Library, and the British Association of CV Writers.
But I love writing and am happy to branch out for the right project. My Master's dissertation was about Emily Bronte and if you ask me to write about nineteenth century literature we'll be friends for life.
If your writing is about other topics - just ask! I won't accept any work that I don't think I can complete to a high standard, so you've got nothing to lose.
-
How does the writing / editing process work?
Working with Word Dragon is a truly collaborative process.
- We'll start with a discussion about your requirements, and if we agree that we're a good match we'll get to work.
- I require a 50% payment up front before I start and will schedule your work as soon as I receive this initial payment.
- I'll carry out any research needed and crack on with your content writing or editing while you make the most of your time elsewhere.
- I'll have the first draft of your project waiting in your inbox by the deadline we've agreed.
- Content writing projects include up to two rounds of revisions (although I hope you'll love the first draft!).
- Developmental editing includes an intial edit, which may involve you providing additional information, and a final edit to incorporate your clarifications and corrections.
- Final payment is due within one week of completion (interim payments may be requested for large projects).
For large projects, I'll keep you updated with progress and you're welcome to check in any time.
Long-term clients sometimes add me to their internal systems (such as Monday.com, Slack, Teams or Asana) to facilitate collaboration, and I'm more than happy to work that way if you prefer. Either way, you'll always get a speedy response to your messages.
-
How do I brief you?
It doesn't matter! I just need to understand what you want.
You can use the contact form to request a phone call or a briefing template, or you can drop me an email.
At the very least, I will need to know what you want me to write about (a title or a topic), an approximate length, and your deadline.
You could also think about including your brand guidelines, keywords, target audience, or anything else you think is important.
-
What is your turnaround time?
Turnaround time depends on:
- the length of the content or the type of editing required
- the amount of research needed
- how busy I am
I'm always happy to discuss my availability with you - just let me know when you need the work by and I'll confirm whether it's feasible.
As a guideline, for content of up to 1,000 words I can probably schedule it for completion within three weeks or so.
-
Do you use AI?
AI is a great tool, but all writing and editing is done by me personally. Working with words is my happy place and I'm not interested in shortcuts. It also means that your content will be created with a human voice, human experience and a human tone.
The only concession I will make to this is to use AI for research if necessary - and even then, I will fact check before including that information in your drafts.
CV writing FAQs
-
How does the CV writing process work?
It’s easy to get a new CV from Word Dragon! Submit some basic information, pay the invoice, have a chat and receive your documents quickly. There’s more detail in this process guide.
-
How long does the process take?
Not long at all! I’ll issue an invoice within 24 hours of receiving your order. When you’ve made payment, we’ll agree a consultation at a mutually acceptable time. You’ll receive your first drafts within 3 days of the consultation.
-
Who are your services for?
Anyone who needs a CV! I’ve worked with jobseekers looking for jobs from entry-level to Board level and everything in between, across every industry imaginable.
-
Do you have experience of my role or industry?
With over 6,000 CVs under my belt, I’ve written job search documents for almost every job and industry you can think of.
The basic rules for writing a great CV are universal and my personal career experience includes the public and private sector, a multinational and start-ups, and employment and self-employment – so I’m well equipped to write CVs for any role.
-
What information do you need from me?
Ideally, I’ll start with your existing CV so that I have some background for our consultation call. Don’t worry if you don’t have one though – we’ll just extend the call slightly to ensure we can cover everything. Alternatively, I can send you a questionnaire to fill in if you'd prefer to take your time over the answers.
It also helps if you can provide an advert for a job you’re interested in – it helps me to understand your aims and tailor the CV accordingly.
-
Will I have the chance to review my CV and request changes?
Absolutely! I want every client to be completely happy. I make decisions about every part of your CV as I write it, but if you have any questions or require any changes then you can get in touch when you’ve reviewed the CV. I’ll provide explanations or make necessary changes based on your feedback.
-
Can I send my CV straight to recruiters?
If you’ve provided me with a job advert, your CV will be tailored specifically towards that role and you can certainly send it straight to a recruiter when you’ve approved the order.
Otherwise, I’ll produce a master CV and you’ll need to make minor tweaks to ensure that it’s tailored to every application that you send off. I can advise you how to do that during our consultation call if you need pointers.
-
Are your CVs ATS friendly?
I have good knowledge of applicant tracking systems.
If you're worried about ATSs, take a look at my blog on the topic. There are a lot of false claims circulating on the internet about ATSs - often originating from less scrupulous businesses using scaremongering tactics to separate you from your money.
I combine the human touch with a sound understanding of how these systems work, to write CVs that get you in front of decision-makers.
-
Do you use AI to write my CV?
AI is a useful tool when used well, but I never use it to write CVs. Every CV I produce is written by me personally. AI-produced content is necessarily generic and can't tell your personal career story in a way that resonates with recruiters and hiring managers.
While cheaper CV writing services may use AI to create documents, I believe that every CV should be as unique as the person it represents. My CVs are tailored to you, your career, and your aspirations. A bespoke document that's as individual as you are.
-
Can I add a cover letter to my order after I've paid?
Yes of course! Just drop me an email.
-
Can I add a LinkedIn profile to my order after I've paid?
Yes of course! Just drop me an email.
-
Why are your services so expensive?
Sure, there are other companies offering CVs for much less than Word Dragon. These companies usually outsource the writing work (sometimes to cheap, non-native English speakers in third world countries) and prioritise volume over service. They also take a significant cut of your payment before passing the work to the writer. How much time do you think the writer will spend on your CV, to get their cut?
These bargain-basement companies are unlikely to offer the quality or service you're looking for.
The price you pay to Word Dragon doesn't just cover the time it takes me to write your CV - it also gives you access to the 15 years' of experience and expertise I've acquired as a professional CV writer and confidence that you're working with a certified member of the British Association of CV Writers. My prices are in line with other independent UK CV Writers.
No outsourcing, no pre-written templates and no production line. Just quality work and a personal service.
-
Do you offer discounts?
Unfortunately I can't lower my prices any further as they're already competitive, but I do offer a range of options to suit different budgets:
A full CV from scratch is the best option if you don't know where to start, are short on time or aren't getting results from your current CV.
The CV evaluation is a more cost-effective option, combining my expertise with your own work.
If you feel confident creating your own CV, my DIY CV Toolkit will help you to meet current best practice standards and avoid common errors.
Alternatively, there's plenty of FREE advice on my blog.
-
Can't I just write my own CV?
Everyone can write a CV, but not everyone can write a good CV.
A professional CV Writer will ensure that your CV meets current best practice, is tailored to the type of role you're looking for, makes a great first impression and really shows off your best attributes. In short, a CV writer takes the guesswork out!
You'll also save time and gain confidence, knowing that you have a CV that represents the very best version of you before you start your job search.
Of course, a new CV is an investment, which is why Word Dragon offers a range of services to ensure that you can put your best foot forward, whatever your budget.
If you want to write your own CV, consider investing in my eBook first so that your CV meets current best practice standards.
Why let opportunities slip by before you realise that your CV needs professional help?
